Your First Community: Creating, Finding, and Maintaining
Hello hello hello hello!
Today’s post is all about the verryyyyyy beginnings of building your very first community.
I’m going to dive into the very, VERY beginning of how we can navigate the community building space. Let’s assume it’s your first game, you have no prior community, you haven’t launched yet, and you’re focusing on organic growth for your preferred community network (e.g. Twitter, Discord, forums, etc.). We’re going to talk about:
- The core tenets to building your first community
- A brief breakdown of where you’ll find your first members
- Tips on keeping them in the community
- How to measure how well you’re doing
Keep in mind that 1) I’m giving extremely generic advice, 2) not every online platform works the same or has the same rate of growth and 3) this is a whole job on its own, so I won’t be able to cover the depth of work that gets put into something like this. However, I hope this is a good starting point for anyone completely lost.
When I talk about your first community, let’s make the goal in this post to be getting your first 50 active members, with “active” meaning they have made a contribution (comment, share, like, etc.) within the past month. This means the post is not focused on getting you, say, 1000 new members who aren’t interacting with you, but REALLY diving into getting a smaller pool of people who are active and excited in your space.
